Where are my clips?
Sometimes you might be confused if you can't find your previous local clips on Medal, especially when you’re certain you didn't delete them. Here are some possible reasons and solutions:
1. Reinstalling Medal
When you reinstall Medal, the app may no longer recognize your local files, unless you have followed the steps here on how to back up your clips.json file and restore your clips.
Regardless, unless you deleted them, the files should still be on your computer.
Solution:
- Locate the files on your computer.
- Import them back into Medal through the app's interface using this guide: How to import to Medal
- If there are too many clips to migrate one at a time, you may want to use the external recorder feature to sync those clips back.
2. Reformatted Computer
If you reformatted your computer without backing up your local files, unfortunately, they are lost, and there’s no way to recover them.
Solution:
- Always back up important files before reformatting your computer to prevent data loss.
3. Moving Local Folders
If you moved your local folders, Medal might not detect the clips in their new location.
Solution:
- Find the clip files on your computer.
- Re-import them into Medal from their new location.
- While it may be too late to follow the proper procedure for moving your local clips, you can still upload them to Medal using this guide: How to import to Medal or the external recorder feature.
4. Using a New Computer
If you are using a new computer, local clips that were not uploaded or synced won't appear.
Solution:
- Medal has a "cloud sync" feature. Clips captured when this feature is enabled will sync to your other devices.
- Manually transfer the clips from your old computer if they were not synced.
- Save your clips on a separate drive and import them back into Medal through the app's interface using this guide: How to import to Medal
- If there are too many clips to migrate one at a time, you may want to use the external recorder feature to sync those clips back.
5. Free up Space Modal
- The "Free Up Space" feature automatically deletes older clips when your storage exceeds a set limit. This helps keep your storage optimized without manual effort.
6. Recover Deleted published clips
- Even after deleting a Clip that was Posted to your Profile or Synced to Medal Cloud, Medal will keep those Clips separated on an Album called Recently Deleted.
- You can access that Album by opening your Medal Desktop app, clicking the Albums button on the left bar, and selecting Recently Deleted.
By understanding these scenarios, you can take the appropriate steps to recover your clips and prevent future loss.
- There, you can Restore any of the Clips available there and they should go back to your Library, just as they were before.
Clips on the Recently Deleted Album will stay there for 30 days from the date they have been deleted. After that time window, they are completely deleted from our servers, without any change of recovery.
This feature is only available for Uploaded Clips.
