Installation Issues

Modified on Wed, 1 May at 10:58 AM

There are many reasons why installation may fail. This could be due to conflicts with other software, using an unsupported Operating System, the download corrupted and so on.

We have detailed some steps below to try and resolve any installation issue you may come across.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Windows Compatibility

Medal only supports 64-bit Windows 7/8/10/11. If you are unsure of which version you are using, follow the steps below:

Note: This step only applies to Windows 7/8/10. If you are on Windows 11, you can skip this step

  • Open your Start Menu or your Search Bar and type This PC
  • At the top of the result, right click on This PC and select Properties
  • Under Device specifications, look for System type.
    It will show either 32-bit operating system or 64-bit operating system

If the System type shows 64-bit operating system, follow the rest of the steps in the article.

If the System type shows 32-bit operating system, you will not be able to install Medal on your PC

How do I upgrade to 64-bit Windows?

The only way to upgrade Windows to 64-bit is to re-install Windows and select the 64-bit option on install.

Run MedalSetup.exe as Administrator

Sometimes programs need administrator permissions in order to install correctly.

To run MedalSetup.exe as administrator;

  • Right click MedalSetup.exe and select Run as administrator

This step usually works best in conjunction with a Purge (reinstall) listed below

Purge (reinstall)

While an install may fail, files are still created which could be potentially corrupted. This is common if you have installed Medal previously and did not uninstall correctly or accidentally tried reinstalling Medal while it was running.

Follow this article to learn how to do a Purge

Anti-Virus

Medal has been whitelisted by most of the major anti-viruses. However, there is always the possibility that your anti-virus has quarantined some of the files used by Medal. We have provided guides for some major anti-virus software that you can follow here.

Controlled Folder Access

Windows built in protection system called Controlled Folder Access is a known culprit to interfere with programs ability to install or run correctly.

You can follow this guide on Controlled Folder Access permissions

Turn Down or Disable UAC

Sometimes, Windows User Account Controls can prevent Medal from installing.

To reduce UAC restrictions, follow the steps below:

  • Open your Start Menu or your Search Bar and type UAC. Click on the result called Change User Account Control settings
  • Turning down the option to the lowest level may help Medal install correctly (You can reset the changes once Medal is installed)

Old Fixes

While these fixes may be old and mostly no longer used, if the previous steps above did not help, these old fixs may work.

Location (VPN)

If you live somewhere that can't access US websites, or your ISP has placed some blocks on your web searches, you may need a VPN.

A VPN will allow you to access websites that you couldn't access before, including Medal.

There are 2 tiers of VPN, paid and free.

Change your DNS

A DNS (Domain Name System) is what allows websites to have their URLs (E.G medal.tv) instead of using numbers (Eg. 192.168.0.1).

By default, your PC will use your ISPs (Internet Service Provider) DNS server. Sometimes, this can be the cause of not being able to connect to some sites or even programs correctly.

To change your DNS, follow these steps:

  • Open control panel and select Network and Sharing Centre
  • Select Change adapter settings
  • Find out which network adapter you are using, right click and select Properties (You may need to provide administrator access)
  • In the Networking tab, you will find a list of connection items. Scroll down until you see Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4). Click on the text and then click on the Properties button
  • Click on Use the following DNS server addresses and type in the two DNS addresses and then select OK (We have provided some trusted DNS addresses below)
  • You will need to repeat Step 5 for Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) if it is available

Here are two trusted DNS servers that you can use:

Google Public DNS

Internet Protocol Version 4:
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
Internet Protocol Version 6:
2001:4860:4860::8888
2001:4860:4860::8844

Cloudflare

Internet Protocol Version 4:
1.1.1.1
1.0.0.1
Internet Protocol Version 6:
2606:4700:4700::1111
2606:4700:4700::1001

If you wish to revert your changes at a later date, follow the steps up to Step 5 and select Obtain DNS server address automatically.
